In this blog post we are going to discuss a quick tip from the previous blog post and then we are going to get down to it with a list of things that Google says you should avoid in regards to your blog or website.

Tip from Podcast 37: Boost SEO Not so secret tips from Google

The truth is that there is not hard and fast rule to post length. Two years ago everyone said “write 300 words and leave it at that.” Now Google is letting us know that they prefer strong in depth content. The truth is, it is not Google that prefers that it is the searchers on Google. People want solid pieces of information. If can provide solid pieces of information in less than 300 words then by golly go for it but I will strongly suggest that you also throw in some 800 world or 1,500 word posts as well. Test it and see which ones work best for you in the long run. The key to all of this is to provide good solid value for your reader. If you do that Google will love you.

Now let’s get down to it and discuss Things Google Says you should avoid Part 2

Don’t feel obligated to purchase a search engine optimization service. Some companies claim to “guarantee” high ranking for your site in Google’s search results. While legitimate consulting firms can improve your site’s flow and content, others employ deceptive tactics in an attempt to fool search engines. Be careful; if your domain is affiliated with one of these deceptive services, it could be banned from our index.

Ok so that is it, now let’s talk about it.

Don’t feel obligated to purchase a search engine optimization service.

Ok this is such an important point. Every single day I get emails from SEO companies wanting me to hire them for my website. It can be bad and it can be good. If you do hire an SEO company, and they are not all bad at all actually, then make sure that you know exactly what they are going to do for you. As a matter of fact, it is because of an SEO company that I am doing this podcast. Their podcast is SEO Podcast Unknown Secrets and, these guys rock.

I actually have someone that hired me to do some SEO tactics for his website. He hired me because he does not have the time to do these things. There are things such as adding meta data to pages and making sure that your images have alt titles and are named well that should be done. There are a lot of positive SEO tactics that should be done, just make sure they are doing the right ones for your site.

Next tip from Google:

Don’t use images to display important names, content, or links. Our crawler doesn’t recognize text contained in graphics. Use ALT attributes if the main content and keywords on your page can’t be formatted in regular HTML.

This is crucial. Google can not read images so don’t think that you can cram your website with nothing but pictures. Pictures are important to a blog but they can not be everything.

ALT title attributes are powerful and they help the search engines understand what you are blog post is about but you still need content in there. You still need actual typed out words.

Next and final Google tip for today

Don’t create multiple copies of a page under different URLs. Many sites offer text-only or printer-friendly versions of pages that contain the same content as the corresponding graphic-rich pages. If your site has identical content that can be reached via different URLs, there are several ways of indicating the canonical (preferred) version of a page.

Do not duplicate content, this is what they are saying here. In the world of blogging there is no reason for this to happen. If you guest blog make it original. If you own more than one site, still make it original. Keep in mind that if you don’t do this Google will choose for you which site has priority and you probably don’t want that.

Imagine a scenario where you have slaved over a piece of content that is sure to bring in tens of thousands of view, amazing right. However, you decide that you will put it on your blog and submit it to article engines too and maybe a high profile blog. In the end the most high profile site will be the one to get the traffic for that piece. Do yourself a favor and leave that amazing content on your site and your site only.
